JG Associates, formerly JG Tax Group Review

JG Tax Group Review, aka JG Associates

JG Associates, formerly calling itself JG Tax Group, is a tax relief and tax services company based in Deerfield Beach, FL. They still use the domain jgtaxgroup.com but refer to the company as Associates. Its co-founder is Jeffrey Galante, an Enrolled Agent, who worked previously at the IRS.

An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), have unlimited practice rights. This means they are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can represent clients before.

We take issue with some of their messaging and website content. They claim on their Offer in Compromise calculator that they have “inside knowledge of the IRS.” First, there is no secret to the Offer in Compromise because it’s a formula that the IRS makes public. Second, if they were acting on inside knowledge about the secret operations of a government entity, this would probably be illegal in a bunch of ways. We will be charitable and assume they didn’t mean what they wrote. Taxes are figured by formulas and math, not secret handshakes and decoder rings.

They do list a few key people on the website, but not a complete enough listing for the amount of work they claim to do. Their claim that they have a 99% satisfaction rate is suspect. According to what measurement – your own or a third-party audit? There is not a single product or service in the entire world that has a 99% satisfaction rate. This is not to say they do not have a majority of satisfied customers, but most reasonable people will look at 99% as suspect for any product or service.

They really sell the IRS Tax Attorney angle in addition to “everyone’s a thief.” They even claim that they can go to tax court for you. We are unsure about this because, in order to represent some in tax court, you must be an attorney and be practicing law, or be one of just a handful of Enrolled Agents qualified for such representation. An attorney working at a Tax Relief company is not practicing law for that tax relief company. An attorney can practice law only for a law firm, which must be owned by one or more attorneys. At a tax relief firm, there is not an attorney-client relationship. Neither of the listed co-founders of JG Tax Relief are attorneys, at least according to their bios, and JG is not a law firm so they cannot legally represent someone as legal representation in tax court. Therefore, for them to represent in true tax court they must have a qualified Enrolled Agent on staff.

Very few people actually go to tax court. This happens when you are either challenging the interpretation of the tax code, or you are in criminal trouble with the IRS. If you must enter a tax court you are probably very wealthy or in very big trouble. Tax liability is likely the least of your concerns.

JG has been in business since 2008.

While we don’t have any reason to think they don’t do good work, but we have issues with all the legal references. They even have the work LAW as part of their phone number. At the end of the day, however, if you deliver quality service to your clients it makes up for questionable tone or style in advertising.

JG Tax Group’s marketing message claims they can save you a lot of money. This may be true for a few people and businesses but this is a false hope for most individuals or businesses seeking tax relief services. While the IRS will occasionally forgive large portions of liability, it is quite rare these days.

JG Associates offers some transparency about a few members of their staff but they do not provide enough information to understand exactly who will be working on your case. We’re disappointed to find their business, which has existed since 2008, is still not accredited with the BBB.

JG Associates appears to do above-average work. We say this because if they were doing bad work, you would find evidence of it on the Internet. As the saying goes, if you make 10 customers happy, they will tell one person. If you make one person unhappy, they will tell ten people.  They may be a good fit for your tax needs.

I must admit I was skeptical about hiring someone I never met to help with a big IRS problem. But when I got a bank levy notice I got really scared and hired JG Tax Group. They made sure the IRS didn’t actually take money out of my bank account like they were going to and I was able to get caught up with everything the IRS wanted.

I didn’t get to make a deal or anything with the IRS but I owed and am now paying back the tax. But I do thank JG for getting taking the whole thing off my plate and making sure I was okay. – Karen

We were broke and didn’t file our taxes one year, then it turned into another. Eventually we got a notice from the IRS that they were wondering if we were filing our taxes or paying them. Something like that. It got our attention so we didn’t know what to do.

My wife found JG online and ended up hiring them without telling me. I was not happy at first but in the end I was happy with the work they did. We ended up filing the taxes we skipped and they got us on a repayment plan with the IRS.

When the IRS said I owed $27,000 I freaked. I didn’t even file for the last 5 years so I have no idea how they can say I owe any money let alone $27k. I worked one job for less than 2 years out of the five and barely made any money. I found Jg tax group on the internet, they explained exactly what was going on so I could understand it. They guided me through the process, were extremely helpful and my tax problems are SOLVED!! I can’t thank them enough!! Thank you guys

We owed the IRS almost $44000 because they audited our 2013 and 2014 tax returns. The IRS would not even allow us to make a payment plan because we had enough money in our house equity to pay them. After making calls to a few tax attorney firms, the only one that appeared to to know what they were doing was JG Tax Group. On top of that, their fee was actually much lower than others. They decided that our best option was to appeal the audit results. We didn’t have to visit or talk to the IRS as JG handled everything. The final outcome was that we only owed them $1240.00! We couldn’t be more happy and recommend their firm highly.

Failing to file and pay my taxes was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.Hiring J.G.

The only service JG Tax Group will provide you is “ensure your compliance with the IRS”. This means: Filing all the required forms you failed to file. Those forms require data that only you can provide. I just paid $5000 for them to do what Turbo Tax does.

Their “negotiation” with the IRS to reduce penalties and interest is nothing more than setting up an Installment Agreement and submitting the IRS’ standard (one time only) request for abatement form. After which, they advised their work was done and the IRS would be in contact within 6 months. When i received a response from the IRS, I learned that JGTG’s experience, knowledge and persuasive negotiation tactics resulted in the IRS reducing my penalties and interest by $0. They did, as promised, or as timing and luck would have it, prevent any liens from occurring…at least while they were still working on my case.

One week AFTER my case was closed, I learned of the lien against my assets.

I feel this company used a bait and switch on me.

My firs conversation with with a real nice guy (Mitchell) and he says they’ll take care of everything.
I shouldn’t be worried. Then after you give them your money, a guy named
John tells me all the BAD things that could happen. I felt like
everything should have been disclosed up front before handing over my
funds. They know they are a scam because the say you cant get a refund.

I wasn’t with them 2 days and they didn’t want to give me my money
    back.SCAM********** DONT USE THIS

Avoid this firm like the plague! They took a huge fee from me, but only
one day later my tax attorney advised to consolidate several tax appeal
cases I had and they would not return the money EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD
DONE ZERO WORK. They are not ethical.

I’m happy with the end game they got with the state, which was levying my bank account. They got that stopped and got me caught up on my tax returns because the state wouldn’t even talk about how much I owed until that. Now I have an end date to my debt, thank god and JG Tax Group.
